TONY SHERIDAN AND THE BEAT BROTHERS 45 RPM Record (Decca 31382, 1962)

PINK label promo

A: My Bonnie
B: The Saints

One of the rarest of Beatles U.S. records.

Both Tony Sheridan and The Beatles were British acts imported to play long hours for the raucous crowds at the Kaiserkeller and The Star-Club in Hamburg's seedy late-night district. The Beatles at that time included StuSutcliffe on bass and Pete Best on drums. German bandleader Bert Kaempert saw Sheridan as a rising star and arranged a recording contract with the Beatles as his backup band. The nine songs thathave surfaced from those sessions feature Sheridan singing lead on seven, Lennon on "Ain't She Sweet", and one instrumental, "Cry fora Shadow". The biggest hit from the session was "My Bonnie", which peaked at #5 in the UK, credited to Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers.

In 1962 the Beatles were already becoming stars in the UK, but this US release proved the US wasn't quite ready for the Beatlemania that would follow two years later. The record went nowhere commercially; in fact, promo copies actually outnumber the commercial copies because all but a few of the latter were just trashed! Now it's a highly sought-after rarity!

THE BEATLES Yesterday and Today Butcher Cover First State Mono LP (Capitol T2553, 1966)

To many, it's the holy grail of Beatles collectibles, the First State "Butcher Cover," the original cover of the Beatle's US release, Yesterday and Today. Many a serious collector of Fab Four memorabilia have diligently searched for even a tattered copy of this rarity that was pulled from record store shelves in the US almost immediately after the album's release in 1966, ordered to be destroyed, and be replaced by the more subdued "Trunk Cover" version. Millions bought the second version, but few managed a copy of the infamous original.
