In 1970 and 1971 Sears sold a "Dramatic Living Skipper Very Best Velvet Set" #1586. The doll included was dressed in the same swimsuit like the #1147 Living Skipper and the 1970 #1117 Dramatic New Living Skipper and came with a velvet orange dress and coat, yellow pantyhose and yellow flats. Even many long term collectors aren't aware that the Sears Exclusive Very Best Velvet Set was made in Japan and included a very rare Living Skipper made in Japan. This doll is probably as rare (or even rarer) than the Japanese SL Skippers. Some people believe a pale blonde Taiwan Living Skipper came with this set, which is wrong. You can see more pictures of the correct doll and markings on the "GIFT SETS" page. The Sears Exclusive Living Skipper had pale blonde hair (lighter than the regular blonde hair of the Taiwan Living Skipper dolls, and made of another fiber) and she was produced in Japan. Skipper's head was softer than the ones of the Living Skipper dolls made in Taiwan and looks similar to the the TNT Skippers heads. There are Japanese Living Skipper dolls with medium brown and with dark brown eyebrows. Dark brown eyebrows are more common. Her markings differ from the markings of the other Living and Dramatic New Living Skipper dolls: 1969 MATTEL INC JAPAN U.S. & FOR. PATD OTHER PATS. PEND. PATD IN CANADA 1967 Note: Living Skipper dolls have a neck knob attached to the neck of their body - there's no knob at the head. A Date With Destiny Barbie, the 2022 National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention exclusive!! The theme of the convention was Roaring 20s. This is Carlyle modern high fashion interpretation of the aesthetic codes of the 1920s. Cropped and spit-curled hairstyles a la Josephine Baker, but done in multi-tonal pink and blue. Hair design by @shirleyfujisaki who made them teeny tiny spit curls do what they do! The make up is inspired by classic 1920s make up like icon Anna May Wong, but a smokey eye in jewel tones instead of charcoal black, and an emphasized Cupids bow lip but done as a heart shape in the center of the lips . Carlyle wanted to do a mini collection, so his designed a unique multi-layered outfit for each doll. His made two dolls, the Black Barbie and the white Barbie. The White Barbie with the blue hair wears a patent pleather mini dress with cut-outs inspired by Art Deco buildings in Chicago. That mini dress is a completely separate piece from the sheer tiered ruffle dress underneath. Big ruffles go down the length of her gloves as well! She also has the black bodysuit, stocking boots and chandelier earrings. The convention name was A Decade of Destiny so his worked with copywriter @elle.oliver.edmonds to come up with a name for the Barbie that connects directly to the convention (and also to Destinys Child in his head & heart lol). Elle cleverly incorporated 1920s era phrases like cats meow and bees knees into the doll description on the back of the box! Mattel photographers created these Destinys Child - Lose My Breath.mp3 photos, with a simple seamless background and dramatic lighting, inspired by 1920s Hollywood portraiture!

Original outfit Department Store Special. This doll with rooted eyelashes was very hard to find, available only in selected fine department stores. Her gown was the same as Barbie doll's #9149 Fashion Original. It was white satin with a patterned nylon overlay on the bodice, with patterned nylon long sleeves and a split front overlay with a short train in back. The neckline, sleeves, and satin and nylon skirts were trimmed in lace. A white vinyl headpiece was covered in the patterned nylon, and it had a single layer tulle veil. The doll also had a white "pearl" necklace, a green and white plastic flower bouquet with a velvety blue ribbon, a garter of white lace on blue elastic, and chunky white shoes.
