Closed edition. Rare, less than 10 known to exist. According to factory records, this figurine was produced in very limited numbers, probably because of its similarity to Hummel 195 and 201. The name "Little Velma" is not official, it was assigned to the figurine by the person who first found one and brought it to the attention of collectors. Experts think this figurine must have been sold only in Canada as all examples found have been in this region. The figurine was designed in 1952 by master sculptor Reinhold Under.

Each single item is hand carved according to the artist’s master piece. The carver requires up to 20 cutting irons in many different sizes and forms to facilitate the production of a figure. The soft lime wood is particularly suitable for carving and allows each figure its own special character. As a result, a truly unique piece is created.

All items are hand painted. Trained painters use water colors and the finest brushes, as they allow the wood grain to remain visible. A specific follow-up treatment lends these figures the originality of a genuine and antique woodcarving.

Old name: “Knight St. George” or “St. George and Dragon.” The original drawing by Sister Hummel for this figurine was reproduced in the 1934 German edition of “Das Hummel Buch,” published by Emil Fink of Stuttgart, Germany. Restyled in 1986. Variations in the wings of the dragon and minor changes in the tail of horse. It is likely that the factory was experiencing excessive breakage in this figurine. Was listed as (TW) “Temporarily Withdrawn” from production in January 1999, but could possibly be reinstated at some future date.

Each single item is hand carved according to the artist’s master piece. The carver requires up to 20 cutting irons in many different sizes and forms to facilitate the production of a figure. The soft lime wood is particularly suitable for carving and allows each figure its own special character. As a result, a truly unique piece is created.

All items are hand painted. Trained painters use water colors and the finest brushes, as they allow the wood grain to remain visible. A specific follow-up treatment lends these figures the originality of a genuine and antique woodcarving.

Older models have dark brown or gray trousers. Similar to Hummel 64 “Shepherd’s Boy” except for single lamb and different colors. Both sizes of “Lost Sheep” were permanently retired by Goebel in the fall of 1992 and will not be produced again.

Older models slightly larger and usually do not have dots or head scarf. Called “Knitter” in old catalogues. The "M.I. Hummel" signature is very faint or difficult to see on some old models. Occasionally found with a stamped "M.I. Hummel" signature on the bottom. “Happy Pastime” is the motif used on the 1978 Annual Plate, Hummel 271. “Happy Pastime” was permanently retired by Goebel as of 31 December 1996 and will not be produced again. The 1996 production bears a special “Final Issue” backstamp and a small gold “Final Issue” commemorative tag.
