Variations are found in size and construction of socket for candle on size 24/I. Old name: “Cradle Song.” Also made without hole for candle (See HUM 262). Sometimes incised 24/3 instead of 24/III. In the spring of 1982 the large size (24/III) was listed by Goebel as “Temporarily Withdrawn,” to be possibly reinstated at a future date. The small size (24/I) also was “Temporarily Withdrawn” from production on 31 December 1989, but was once again listed on the 1997 pricelist. The small size was again listed as (TW) in January 1999. Both the large size (24/3) and the small (24/I) have been found in Belgium in white over glaze in the (TM2) “full bee” trademark.

Each single item is hand carved according to the artist’s master piece. The carver requires up to 20 cutting irons in many different sizes and forms to facilitate the production of a figure. The soft lime wood is particularly suitable for carving and allows each figure its own special character. As a result, a truly unique piece is created.
All items are hand painted. Trained painters use water colors and the finest brushes, as they allow the wood grain to remain visible. A specific follow-up treatment lends these figures the originality of a genuine and antique woodcarving.

Side of base is incised "(c) The Walt Disney Company". Anri medal disk trademark (used from 1982-1988) is present on bottom of base as a mark of origin and genuinity. Made in Italy.

Roman numerals to the left of the HUM number indicate the size of the candle that fits into the figurine. Size I is .6 cm, size III is 1 cm. Also called "Little Heavenly Angel" in old catalogues. Candleholders are always on right side of angel. Originally modeled in 1935 by master sculptor Reinhold Unger. Very early pieces do not have a size designator--incised 40 only. Since these figrurines are relatively small in size, the signature may be only "HUM" on the back or on the leg of the angel.

This popular design was modeled by master sculptor Reinhold Unger in 1935. Size 23/I was restyled in 1978, with new textured finish, by master modeler Gerhard Skrobek. Older models can be found with either Arabic (23/3) or Roman (23/III) three. Both sizes were sold in white over glaze at one time in Belgium and would be considered rare today. Old name: "Ave Maria." Most older models have rounded corners on the base of the large size while newer models are more square. Early double crown-marked, large size found without size designator--23 only. The large size (23/III) was listed as (TW) "Temporarily Withdrawn" in January 1999.

Size: 4-1/2” to 7”. Originally modeled by master sculptor Reinhold Unger in 1937. Has been restyled several times through the years. Many size variations. Full bee models are usually the largest size. Old name: “Under One Roof.” Slight difference between old and new models other than size. Several variations in structure of bottom of base design. This motif was used for the first Anniversary Plate, Hummel 280, in 1975. A new small size (71 2/0) was issued in the spring of 1985. The large size has now been renumbered 71/1. There are two variations of the new small size. The first production appeared with the inside of the umbrella hand painted with obvious brush strokes while later production has the inside painted by airbrush. A special painting variation of the small size Hummel 71 2/0 was produced in 1997 for QVC television program and sold by mail order. It was painted with a yellow umbrella with tan colored highlights, a decal signature on back of the umbrella and a special “60th Anniversary” back stamp and was available at local dealers.
